Investigation into the tremor phenomenon of plug flow in deep-sea minerals lifting system by DEM-MBD coupled simulation
Hoisting and Conveying Equipment and TechnologiesIn recent decades, deep-sea mining technology has witnessed big advancement. A variety of deep-sea mining tools, minerals lifting systems, and minerals dewatering equipment have been developed. In a recent publication, Liu et al. proposed a new mechanical-hydraulic hybrid vertical lifting (MHHVL) system for deep-sea minerals lifting [1]. In the MHHVL system, the deep-sea minerals particles are hold by numerous carriers. Therefore, the system transports deep-sea minerals in plug flow regime. However, plug flow could also cause pipe blockage and set great risks to the MHHVL system. In this study, DEM-MBD coupled simulation is applied to investigate the tremor phenonmenon of plug flow during vertical lifting. The experimental results demonstrated that the lift error obtained through DEM-MBD coupling simulation was less than 15%, confirming the model's effectiveness and accuracy.
