Impact of Hardweld Patterns on Sliding Wear in Bulk Material Transport: A Discrete Element Method Study

Constructions and Design Engineering

The wear of conveyor systems in bulk materials handling challenges efficiency and maintenance costs. Abrasive materials like coal cause continuous wear on belts and chutes, leading to degradation and downtime. Understanding wear mechanisms is essential for extending system life and productivity. Hard welding, applying wear-resistant material to a softer substrate, enhances wear resistance and can be robotically applied. The pattern and distribution of hard welds significantly impact wear behavior and efficiency. This study employs the Discrete Element Method (DEM) to analyze the effects of different hardfacing patterns on sliding wear. Focusing on abrasive wear, the research examines how hard weld patterns affect wear on conveyor components. The findings offer insights into reducing wear and extending the service life of conveyor systems.

Host city and venue - Vienna

Vienna (Wien) is the federal capital and largest city of Austria, and one of the nine states of Austria. Vienna is Austria's primate city, with a population of about 1.9 million (2.6 million within the metropolitan area, nearly one third of Austria's population), and its cultural, economic, and political centre. It is the 7th-largest city by population within city limits in the European Union.  Read more...
